What is hills stores?

Hills Stores was a chain of discount department stores that operated in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States from 1957 to 1999. The company was founded by Herbert H. Goldberg in 1957 in Youngstown, Ohio. The stores were known for their low prices and large selection of merchandise, including clothing, toys, electronics, and home goods.

At its peak, Hills Stores operated over 150 locations across the United States. The company was particularly popular in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. However, the chain faced increased competition from other discount retailers such as Walmart and Kmart in the 1990s and struggled financially.

In 1998, Hills Stores was acquired by Ames Department Stores, another struggling discount retailer. Ames attempted to revitalize the Hills brand by converting some of its stores to the Hills format, but ultimately went bankrupt in 2002.

Today, the Hills Stores brand is no longer in operation, and its former locations have been repurposed or converted to other retail chains. However, the company's legacy lives on in the memories of many former customers who fondly remember the store’s unique offerings and affordable prices.
